The Lullaby

I see the moon
Reflecting.

A haloed glow
Like fireflies dancing
On the water’s edge.

The boat I ride moves
Slowly closer,
Timed in strokes
As the faceless rower
Goes backward
And I forward.

The sun set
Just a while ago
And as I look back
The colors hang low:
Pink, orange, and blue
Like dying flames.

I leave one light
For another
As I follow time
With the tides
Each stroke lapping
Bringing me closer
And closer to night.

If only each night
Could come as quietly
As this one
In my soul.

As the paddle submerges
And resurfaces,
A tinge of water
Kisses my skin
Awakening my heart.
Each time
Suddenly I am
Aware that I am alive
And that I have a place
In this world.

We row into the night
So at dawn
I may start my search again;
The search
For who I want to be
How I want to live.

Tonight though,
I sleep
And in my dreams
The gentle water lapping
Fills my soul
With the lullaby of today.
